The Intrepid Volunteers Challenge

Go Make A Difference

Auckland, New Zealand.

A great night was had by all at the Intrepid Travel National Volunteer Awards in June this year. The Minister for the Community and Voluntary Sector, Hon. Tariana Turia delivered a great speech commending work done through out the country by hardworking and talented volunteers. She noted that we are a nation of winners because we all benefit from the work volunteers through out the country. She also commented on how difficult it was for the judges to pick just one winner from a field rich with talent and tireless dedication.

Out of a field of 23 finalists, Bridgit Bretherton-Jones stood out from the rest and was crowned the 2009 Volunteer of the Year. Bridgit donates her time to the charity Preventing Violence in the Home. In NZ, family violence accounts for 45% of all murders, and police reported a 15% increase in reported offenses between 2007 and 2008.

Bridgit works to help clients whose partners have abused them. She goes to their homes, police stations or hospitals to provide support and comfort after assaults have occurred, and she also works with clients to develop a safety plan for the future.

Bridgit is a vital member of the team, mentoring new volunteers and providing care and support for countless people affected by family violence. Bridgit fulfills her role with distinction and is a perfect example of a selfless and passionate volunteer helping to strengthen communities in NZ.

As part of her prize pack, Good magazine will support Bridgit's work by donating 20% of all magazine subscriptions over the next two months to Preventing Violence in the Home. Bridgit also received a $5000 intrepid volunteering holiday to anywhere she desires.

The four other finalists were: Kate Findlay (Childfund NZ), Michael Turner (The New Zealand Spinal Trust), Sandy Morrison (Arts Regional Trust) and Stacey Freeman (World Society for the Protection of Animals). Each individual has made a remarkable contribution to their related fields through volunteer work.

Over all it was a tremendously successful evening, highlighting the hard work of thousand of selfless New Zealanders who dedicate their time and skills to a variety of causes. Lets hope this year's amazing finalists inspire others to give back to their community.
