Seeing how just being there makes a difference. Giving money to a charity is helpful but actually being there was giving on an entirely different level. We excited the locals everyday just by being there. The word that you are helping spreads quickly and even the people who were not affected directly were grateful for our support. I learnt a lot from the way the Ghanaians live, from their attitudes and their lifestyles. It seemed so clear from their contentment, especially in the villages, that they accepted the way they lived as they knew no different. They grew their own food and did not worry about their amenities or belongings. They lived in poverty but dealt with it in a way that I could never have imagined. Their material needs were minimal and the respect they had for their traditions was inspiring.
Katie Beverley spent 6 weeks teaching and building in Ghana.
